Construction of Almac's new US$120m North American headquarters in north Philadelphia is proceeding on schedule for completion by the end of this year.

The 240,000ft2 building on a 40 acre site will house analytical services, including API ad drug product analysis, method development and validation and stability studies. It will also be home to the company's solid state services and legal and IP support.

Almac also took the opportunity at Informex to launch its rapidd service in the US. Aimed at overcoming the disadvantages of the outsourcing model caused by many disparate participants operating in isolation by co-ordinating the project management, reducing duplication and greatly speeding up the time needed to reach the clinical trial stage.

Since rapidd was launched in October 2009, two projects are underway - both for biotech start-up companies and involving peptides requiring sterile formulation. The first project is expected to take 11 months and is likely to finish in October, representing an estimated time saving of at least six months, according to Denis Geffroy, vp business development.

The second project is likely to take 15 months to complete, compared with 24 months using conventional development routes.

'Although rapidd was designed for companies like these who do not have the resources to carry out most of the development in house,' Geffroy added, 'we are also in discussions with several large pharmaceutical companies over the use of rapidd.'
