BASF is reorganising its businesses with effect from 1 January, 2008 into six segments: chemicals, plastics, functional solutions, performance products, agricultural solutions and oil & gas.

A new operating division, Care Chemicals, will be established within the performance products segment. It will combine the activities of the former Fine Chemicals division - including products for the pharmaceutical industry - with the Performance Chemicals division's detergents and cleaners business.

BASF says that this will enable it to better serve the needs of its customers in the nutrition, cosmetics and personal care sectors of the consumer goods industry and in the pharmaceutical industry. The new division will employ approximately 4,600 employees worldwide and will be headed by Gabriel Tanbourgi. The division's annual sales are approximately Euro 3bn.

The performance products segment will consist of this new division together with the Acrylics & Dispersions (previously Functional Polymers) and Performance Chemicals divisions.

"We are focusing our businesses even more closely on our customers," said Dr Juergen Hambrecht, chairman of the board of executive directors of BASF. "This will enable us to bring our products and system solutions faster to market and will create additional potential for value-adding growth."
