British Pharmacopoeia 2011 published

Published: 13-Dec-2010

Latest edition available to view on iPhone and iPad

The publisher of the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) is urging organisations and individuals to order the essential guide to pharmaceutical products and substances in time for the New Year, to remain legally compliant.

The 2011 edition of the six-volume BP can be viewed, for the first time, on the Apple iPad.

First published in 1864 and legally effective in the UK from 1 January, the 2011 edition contains 51 new monographs for formulated preparations and additional standards for widely used unlicensed formulations.

Organisations should place their orders with publisher The Stationery Office (TSO) by 29 December (UK) or 21 December (International) to ensure the reference guide arrives before the New Year deadline.

Sue Jermany, marketing manager for TSO, said: ‘This is a vital publication which makes a valuable contribution to public health by setting publicly available standards for the quality of medicines.

‘It’s important that we make the information as accessible as possible so people in the industry can view it at a time and place convenient to them.’

In the latest edition, clearly laid out sections include monographs that set out the mandatory standards for active substances, excipients, formulated preparations, blood-related products, immunological products, radiopharmaceutical preparations, surgical materials, herbal and complementary medicines. There are also supporting General Notices, test methods, infrared spectra and supplementary information.

There are a number of format options, costs and inclusions:

  • Six printed volumes including a single volume of the BP (Veterinary);
  • An online version via www.pharmacopoeia.co.uk (single-user licence) compatible with the iPhone and iPad;
  • Three free online updates in January, April and July to harmonise the BP with the European Pharmacopoeia;

  • A fully linked and searchable CD-ROM (single-user licence);
  • Organisations can purchase a network licence for multiple users;
  • A printed copy with single-user online access and CD-ROM costs £830.00.
