Capacity quadrupled to enable company to meet demand for small scale manufacturing

Albemarle is expanding four-fold the capacity of its cGMP kilo lab at its site in South Haven, Michigan, US, to enable it to meet customer needs for small scale manufacturing of APIs. The expanded facility will contain 25L to 100L reactors with overheads for distillation and an operating temperature range from -30 degrees C to +120 degrees C. Expected to come on stream during the second quarter of 2014, it is part of a planned US$4m capital investment in the company's assets in 2014.

Other expenditure includes the installation of a large 1m2 Nutsche filter unit for product isolation, also at the South Haven site, as well as the implementation of a new electronic quality system from MasterControl.

Albemarle also plans to increase its analytical capabilities during 2014, including LCMS and increased heavy metal detection.
