The global pharmaceutical packaging market is forecast to be worth US$73.04bn by 2018, growing at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2012, according to a new report. In 2011, the market was valued at $50.07bn.

The report, Global and US Pharmaceutical Packaging (Plastic Bottles, Parental Containers, Blister, Closures, Labels and Others) Market for Manufacturing and Contract Packaging – Industry Analysis, Size, Share , Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2012–2018, published by Transparency Market Research, says packaging that provides a combination of product protection, quality, security, tamper evidence and visual appeal is expected to boost the market within the forecast period.

New regulations for pharmaceutical packaging are also expected to contribute to growth, but availability and volatility in the prices of raw materials will have a negative effect.

A shift towards nano enabled pharmaceutical packaging and growing demand from developing countries such as China, Brazil and India are expected to open up new opportunities for growth.

In 2011, plastic bottles were the largest product segment of pharmaceutical packaging, accounting for over 20% of the market.

Parental containers are expected to be the fastest growing product segment due to introduction of new injected therapies resulting from advancements in biotechnology.

Demand for pharmaceutical packaging was highest in North America and Europe, which together accounted for over 60% of the market in 2011.

Asia Pacific is expected to show the fastest growth over the forecast period owing to increasing government initiatives, growing contract manufacturing activities and ageing populations. The market in Asia Pacific is expected to reach $20.63bn by 2018.

Key participants in the pharmaceutical packaging market include Amcor, Gerresheimer, Becton Dickinson, MeadWestvaco, Rexam, West Pharmaceutical Services, 3M and Tear and Tape, among others, the report finds.

In addition to a detailed market share analysis of these companies, the report provides revenue details, as well as demand forecasts in various regions including North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World.

As well as plastic bottles, the report also analyses the parental containers, blister packaging, other primary packaging, and closures and labels market segments.
