Inaugural event raises funds for local charities

Thanks to the support of the business community, Discovery Park’s inaugural Golf Classic event has raised £3,000 in aid of local charities.

The Golf Classic, which took place at the Prince’s Golf Club in Sandwich, raised the funds for three charities from the Sandwich area: Age Concern Sandwich, Sandwich Community Lights Committee and Sandwich Scouts and Guides, with the monies raised divided equally among the three.

One of the organisations to benefit from the generous donation was Sandwich Community Lights Committee, with chairman Paul Carter receiving a cheque for £1,000 from Discovery Park’s Project Manager, Kimberley Anderson.

'It is great news that Discovery Park is supporting Sandwich Town's Christmas Lights this year; their generosity and community spirit are evidence that they are a part of the town's partnership in promoting community events,' said Carter. 'I am grateful for their donation and continued support.'

A total of 15 teams took part in the sporting event, created by the leading science and business park, for the chance to win the first ever Golf Classic Cup and a wide range of prizes, as well as supporting local causes.

The winner of the Golf Classic Cup was Harriet Ayling from Investaco Independent Financial Advisors, based at Discovery Park, and as the only female player, she was thrilled to be presented with the Golf Classic Cup. She said: 'The golf event was in aid of some amazing local charities and was a brilliant day.

'Apart from the weather, everything included was excellent and the Investaco team really enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in this event. Winning was just the icing on the cake, especially being the only woman that took part and beating the lads on our team. Overall it was a great day for some great causes and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.'

'The team winners were Jaytee Biosciences. John Tiley, Managing Director, said: 'I am sure everyone who participated had a great day; the Jaytee Team is proud to have won this inaugural event and hope that it will become an annual event in the Discovery Park Social Calendar.

'I would also add that over the years Jaytee has entered teams into many Charity Golf days and has never won before. I hope that Discovery Park reaches its charity donation target and we at Jaytee look forward to defending our title next year!'

Businesses across the East Kent region were keen to get involved in supporting the event, either by joining the competition itself, donating prizes or through sponsorship opportunities. More than 14 businesses from Discovery Park took part, including Mylan, Fresh House Cleaning and Augean, and tenants Business Computer Solutions offered support in kind by sponsored the practice range, among others.

In addition to the amazing support from tenants and suppliers to Discovery Park, local traders from Sandwich were also keen to show their support for the event and donated prizes. Scrumalicious Cake Company, Sandwich Taxis, Hercules Wine Company, The Bell Hotel and Creations Hair were among the many local companies who donated generous gifts to ensure as much money was raised as possible. As part of the post event celebrations, an auction took place and successful bidders were able to secure a weekend in a BMW and a two-night stay at The Salutation Hotel.

Discovery Park was delighted with its first ever charity golf day, which has proven to be a huge hit, despite unfortunate weather. Jeff Hind, Operations Director at Discovery Park, said: 'It was a fantastic day and very much enjoyed by all. People were very generous with their time and money and we were able to raise valuable funds for local charities that made the day a great success. Although the weather didn’t hold up in the afternoon, it didn’t affect the day and spirits were high as we were all there for the same reason, to have fun and raise money.

'We see the Discovery Park Golf Classic as very much a community event with a lot of businesses from across the park and the wider community getting together to show their support. Overall, the day was a triumph and we are very much looking forward to next year's event.'
