Edelmann’s three-point packaging concept supports patient compliance

Patient-friendliness confirmed by Dr Meyer-Hentschel Institute in Germany

International packaging group Edelmann is focusing on three main features in its CEeasy pharmaceutical packaging to ensure patient compliance.

First, the German firm has used clear graphics to ensure that opening instructions are understandable and that information on the medication and its consumption are easy to find.

Second, its handy construction with large, easy-to-grab flaps make it easy to open and close the packaging.

The third feature is clear presentation, for example, using inner compartments that make it easier for patients to take the medication and instruction leaflets out of the pack.

According to the World Health Organisation, medical treatment fails for one in every two patients because drugs are taken incorrectly or inconsistently. As well as putting patients at risk, non-compliance also costs health systems billions every year. In Germany alone, for example, market research institute IMS Health puts the figure at an average of €13bn a year.

'Packaging that is designed to be user-friendly can considerably improve compliance with courses of treatment,' said Helmut Sieber, Head of Edelmann’s Technical Design Centre. 'Some studies have already proven that the construction and graphics of pharmaceutical packaging can be a big help in the consumption of medicines.'

The patient-friendliness of the folding cartons in the CEeasy range was confirmed in testing at Germany’s Dr Meyer-Hentschel Institute. In close consultation with pharmaceutical manufacturers, the concepts developed can quickly be tailored to the relevant product and its application.
