Driven by technological advances and government initiatives

The global anti-counterfeit packaging market in pharmaceuticals and food is expected to have a market value of US$142.7bn by 2020, up from $57.4bn in 2013, according to a new study by Allied Market Research.

The report, Anti-counterfeit Packaging Market in Food and Pharmaceuticals – Technologies, Applications and Global Forecast through 2020, expects growth of 13.9% CAGR from 2013 to 2020, driven by technological advances and government initiatives to curb counterfeiting.

'Counterfeiting practices are rising for food and pharmaceutical products due to the globalisation of the retail sector and dilution of the supply chain,' say Allied Market Research analysts Debbie Shields and Roshan Deshmukh.

Cost is a significant factor in counterfeiting, and drugs and food items that cost less are counterfeited most often, mainly due to the lower risk involved in terms of penalties.

The pharmaceutical drugs anti-counterfeit packaging market was valued at $33.7bn in 2013 and is expected to grow

Anti-counterfeit packaging is used in both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs and increased demand for OTC drugs, boosted by the Internet, has increased incidences of counterfeiting. These threats can be minimised through the implementation of RFID technology in collaboration with E-pedigree, which is providing real-time tracking of products with inventory level management across the supply chain, says the report.

The pharmaceutical drugs anti-counterfeit packaging market was valued at $33.7bn in 2013 and is expected to grow at 13.2% CAGR from 2013 to 2020.

Similarly, a surge in demand for packaged food is luring counterfeiters to duplicate food products. The anti-counterfeit market for packaged food products was $23.7bn in 2013, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.8% in the same time period.

Geographically, anti-counterfeit packaging technology is prevalent in developed countries, as these countries face more problems from duplicate products.

Increased awareness of authenticating counterfeit products is also reinforcing the anti-counterfeit packaging market. North America is the highest revenue generator with $35.6bn expected by 2015, while Asia-Pacific is forecast to be the fastest-growing market at a CAGR of 15.5% from 2013 to 2020.
