Nicholas Piramal India's (NPIL) new research unit in Scotland is now up and running.

The unit, called NPIL (Innovations), will focus on novel processes for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and is being headed up by Ian Grudy, former director of sales, NPIL UK.

The centre will initially employ some 25 staff on the development of its technology SCRAM - designed to deliver improved process yields in the production of certain chemicals, cut costs and environmental waste.

NPIL acquired the Avecia Pharmaceuticals' business in December 2005 and Pfizer's Morpeth, manufacturing unit in June 2006.
