Three appointments for the MHRA and two for NICE

The Department of Health has announced that three new Non-Executive Directors will join the board of the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has also welcomed two Non-Executive Directors.

The three appointments at the MHRA are: Dame Valerie Beral, Director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford; Professor Alexander Markham, Professor of Medicine at the University of Leeds; and Professor David Webb, Christison Professor of Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Edinburgh.

The NICE board has appointed Professor Finbarr Martin, Consultant Physician in General and Geriatric Medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust as one of its new Non-Executive Directors. He is also Honorary Professor of Medical Gerontology at Kings College London and past President of the British Geriatrics Society.

The other appointment, of Bill Mumford, Chief Executive of MacIntyre, a service provider for children and adults with learning disabilities and Chair of the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group, is for first time from a social care background.

Martin and Mumford will join the NICE board to offer independent advice to the Chairman and Executive Directors.
