RSSL Pharma has launched a mass liquid chromatography - mass spectrometer (Q-TOF LC-MS) to provide an antibiotic identification service for the pharmaceutical industry.

The new GMP verified instrument can differentiate between the mass of ions to five decimal places and will provide a greater degree of certainty when analysing samples for the presence or absence of antibiotics.

"Using the new equipment we can provide pharmaceutical companies with an assurance of the quality of their APIs, that their cleaning is effective and their waste water is not contaminated," said Nick Taylor of RSSL Pharma.

As well as looking at the absolute mass, the instrument can be used in MS-MS mode, looking at fragments of the molecule (similar to a molecular fingerprint), as a further check on certainty.

In addition to screening for antibiotics the LC-MS can be used to investigate and identify other contaminants.
