On risks to public and animal health caused by use of antibiotics in livestock

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has launched a public consultation on the risks to public and animal health caused by the use of antibiotics in livestock.

Organised at the request of the European Commission, EMA’s AntiMicrobial Expert Group (AMEG) will manage this consultation.

Pharmaceutical companies have been asked to participate in a meeting on 28 February designed to help them contribute to this process, which will end between April and September, depending on the topics being assessed. EMA will draft advice following the consultation, for release between June and December.

The Agency wants advice on which existing antibiotics are considered so important for human healthcare that they should be restricted for animal use.

It also wants guidance on what veterinary medicine market approval applications should be refused over concerns that their use might promote antimicrobial resistance. It also wants suggestions on mitigating risks posed by existing medicines or those proposed for market authorisation.
