Three out of five molecules have shown to be potential chemotherapeutics for cancer treatment

The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dortmund University in Germany relating to research into cancer drugs. ‘The new chemicals that we discover in our lab from raw materials would be transferred to strengthen the cancer drug research programme,’ said IICT Chief Scientist S Chandrasekhar.

Dortmund University works closely with the Max Planck Institute’s Drug Discovery and Development Centre on stem cell research. All the tests would be done at the Max Planck Institute in Germany.

Chandrasekhar added that the IICT and Mayo Clinic, USA, had developed four new chemicals for treating renal cancer.

Earlier, three synthetic molecules were designed and developed by scientists of CSIR-IICT and have shown good leads for the treatment of breast and lung cancers and have been licensed to a company in the US.

Ahmed Kamal, Director of IICT, said that in all five molecules designed and developed by IICT were granted US patents. The molecules were later licensed to the US company. Of the five, three molecules have shown to be potential chemotherapeutics for cancer treatment in pre-clinical studies.
