Pester Pac and Siemens jointly develop tracking system for pharmaceutical cartons

Pester Pac Automation of Germany and Siemens IT Solutions and Services have developed a serialisation solution that tracks pharmaceutical packs through the end-of-line packaging process, from the coding of single folding cartons, to the collation, the shipping case and the complete pallet.

The solution includes a serialisation unit for labelling, controlling and discharging pharmaceutical folding cartons, a bundler and case packer. From the controlling and software point of view, the entire spectrum from French coding to the complete track-and-trace solution can be reproduced with the Siemens system.

‘Our cooperation with Siemens puts us in a position to offer our customers a flexible and global overall solution,’ said Lorenz Fleschutz, head of software engineering at Pester.

Siemens added its Auto ID Connector (SAC) serialisation solution to Pester’s end-of-line packaging line. In addition, the firm installed a detection system for 2D data matrix codes. Pester uses the Simatic MV440 code reader to read the 2D data matrix codes and plain text, which offers a high processing speed and is easily integrated in any machinery.

Siemens also included an SAP-certified interface between the ERP system and production and developed a sector-specific IT solution from the shop floor, quality control, incoming and outgoing goods, manual packaging process support, serial number management and traceability right up to the management and control of the installed hardware, such as cameras and printers.
