Will allow scientists to carry out their research in a paperless laboratory

Xyntek, a US integrator of laboratory automation and information systems, is to install a global Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) solution for a biopharmaceutical client.

The ELN will enable scientists to conduct their drug research and development activities in a paperless laboratory, while increasing productivity, efficiencies and collaboration, improving GxP compliance, and ensuring IP protection, the Yardley, PA-based firm says.

The ELN will integrate existing lab automation technologies and information systems such as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Scientific Data Management Systems (SDMS), Chromatography Data Management Systems (CDMS), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems, and compound/sample management and fulfilment systems into a single solution.

Xyntek will help implement the ELN for both small and large molecule research and development across multiple sites in the US and Europe. The number of users will eventually exceed 1,500. The ELN will offer considerable flexibility and customisation so that application conforms to the needs of the users and business processes.

As part of this effort, Xyntek will be involved with key aspects of project planning, detailed assessments, design and execution activities, including:

  • Gathering information on the requirements of individual users and transform their expectations into notebook templates, workflows and functions that result in increased ease of use and reduce upfront training hurdles for laboratory associates
  • Prioritising template design and creation for department checklists
  • Templates and recipe development and execution with a focus on collecting and recording data and metadata that are normally the content of paper-based notebooks
  • Integrating ELN forms and/or templates with third-party applications
  • Training subject matter experts (SME) on ELN
  • Collaborate with compliance personnel on issues of GxP relevance
