Specialist pharmaceutical contracting group Thermal Transfer has appointed Richard Harris as an area sales manager. Based in Glossop in the UK, he will focus on securing contracts for the total build of cleanrooms, laboratories and controlled environments.

Marie-Elana Leone has been appointed international key account manager at Degussa Corporation's Roehm Pharma polymers business. She will be responsible for co-ordinating the global account management of Abbott Laboratories, Pharmacia, Eli Lilly and Bristol-Myers Squibb, and will be looking to develop long-term strategies with the sales and marketing departments and with product development.

The British Chemical Distributors and Traders Association (BCDTA) has a new director. Peter Newport has taken over from Colin Wainwright, who assumes the role of director, special projects, prior to his retirement in 18 months' time.

Newport has worked in the distribution sector for 25 years, including 10 years as a director with chemical distributor Ellis & Everard.

Dr Michael Tabona has joined the Nottingham-based company Matrix Therapeutics as medical director.

He spent 13 years as vice president in clinical r&d and medical affairs at SmithKline Beecham and served his final year as a member of the GlaxoSmithKline merger team.

Avecia has named Richard Fengl as key account manager in Fine Chemicals - Pharmaceuticals. Based in Kingsport, Tennessee, he will be responsible for business development in Eastern North America.

Fengl was most recently commercial development manager for Eastman Chemical's Fine Chemicals business unit.

He previously held a series of positions in Eastman's cellulose esters pharmaceutical products business.

David Jones is replacing Kim Morrison as business director of Anstead International with effect from 1 November. Pharmaceutical raw material supplier Anstead International is part of Royal Vopak, following the acquisition of Ellis & Everard in January. Jones was previously the corporate account director for Vopak Chemical Distribution, which required him to work extensively with the pharma industry in a European role.

The new managing director of Propack Data is David Prior. He is responsible for all UK consultancy, sales, project management and service activities. His previous role involved overseeing the project management, implementation and support of a number of UK and International implementations of Propack Data software solutions for Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Clinical Trial Management (CTM).

Extract Technology, of Huddersfield, manufacturer of pharmaceutical containment systems, has made a number of new appointments. Don Leigh has recently joined as operations director. Since his arrival, sub-contract manufacturing has virtually halved, as the company strives to bring more production in-house through the use of more effective planning.

Paul Handley has recently become group finance director as well as a director of both Carlisle Holding and Carlisle UK.

Meanwhile at Extract Technology subsidiary PBSC Ken Smith takes up the post of operations manager.

David Phillips has been appointed chief commercial officer of Argenta Discovery, based in Harlow in the UK. He was previously vice president of group sales and marketing at Oxford Molecular, parent company of Cambridge Discovery Chemistry where he led negotiations with leading pharmaceutical corporations around the world.

Evotec OAI has named Dr Dirk Horst Ehlers as chief financial officer. He succeeds Joern Aldag who became chief executive officer of the company in July.

Dr Elliot Finer has announced his intention to retire as the director general of the Chemical Industries Association. 'I have very much enjoyed working for the CIA and the chemical industry,' he said. 'I am proud of what we have achieved together over the period I have been at the CIA.'
