DSM Pharmaceutical Products, a global provider of custom manufacturing services to the pharma industry, has joined the Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable (Roundtable) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) as an associate member.

The Roundtable is a partnership between the ACS Green Chemistry Institute and pharmaceutical companies. Current members include AstraZeneca, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Merck & Co, Pfizer, Schering-Plough and Wyeth. It was founded in 2005 to promote sustainable manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) by integrating the principles of green chemistry and engineering into drug discovery and manufacturing.

Recently it was decided that companies which are significantly engaged in r&d or manufacturing of intermediates and APIs for the pharmaceutical industry could apply for membership.

DSM Pharmaceutical Products is the first such company to join.

Bob Hartmayer, president and ceo of DSM Pharmaceutical Products, said: "˜I am proud that DSM's ambition to play in the top league of sustainable manufacturers is recognised by the Roundtable members. It stimulates us to continue to work with our customers towards new and green synthetic routes for API synthesis; to be the first supplier company to join this Roundtable is a real honour.'
