French drug company Sanofi-aventis has agreed to provide financing to the California Institute of Technology in exchange for bioengineering research from the university.

The collaboration will be known as the Sanofi-aventis Bioengineering Research Program at the California Institute of Technology (SABER) and should "significantly complement" Sanofi's research technologies, according to Sanofi executive vice president of r&d. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The research programme will provide financial support for several core facilities for up to five years, including the Kavli Nanosciences Institute, the Molecular Observatory and the Biological Imaging Centre, which are all located at Caltech, based in Pasadena. It will also support individual Caltech scientists through bioengineering annual awards (BEAs) to accelerate innovative research projects.
