Chairman of the Management Board of B. Braun Melsungen receives the most important award for outstanding entrepreneurs in Germany

Professor Dr Ludwig Georg Braun, Chairman of the Management Board of B. Braun Melsungen AG, was awarded the Deutscher Gründerpreis 2010 – German Entrepreneurs Award – for his life’s work at a ceremony that took place in Berlin. The panel of judges paid tribute to Braun ‘for his outstanding entrepreneurship’, recounting how, through systematic internationalisation and constant innovations, he developed the family company, which was founded as a pharmacy in 1839, into a global market leader in the field of pharmaceuticals and medical technology.

They added that Braun had created a corporate culture centered on communication and had introduced a modern, innovative office concept. The panel of judges also singled out the company’s training culture as exemplary.

In addition, he had shown the same level of commitment in his years as President of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and was held in high esteem by all his counterparts in the realms of business and politics. He has also lent active support to business start-ups and is a committed patron of the arts.

Ludwig Georg Braun is at the helm of his family company in its fifth generation. After completing a bank traineeship, he worked in Brazil and the US before joining the family company in 1972 at the age of 29. Braun moulded the 3,000-person company into a global player with 123 overseas locations and almost 40,000 employees.

‘The Deutscher Gründerpreis is clinching proof that being an entrepreneur in Germany is worth the effort,’ Braun said on receiving the award. ‘The Life’s Work category award acknowledges those who manage a family company in a sustainable manner rather than aiming for short-time profit maximisation.’
