India outpaces global companies launches
Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers outpaced multinational companies in launching new products last year, according to a recent survey. A total of 1,417 new products were launched, producing a combined turnover of US$54.0m (€54.8 m). Cipla was the most aggressive company with 93 new launches in 2001, which increased its market share by 5% and its turnover by $3.0m (€3.0m). Ranbaxy came second with 58 new products, raisings its market share by 6% and giving it sales of $4.0m (€4.1m).
Other leading domestic pharma companies with significant launches included Alkem Laboratories, which launched 53 new products, Sun Pharma with 40, and Zydus Cadila with 36 new products. Cadila Pharma and Alembic each launched 31 new products, followed by Dr Reddy's Laboratory and Nicholas Piramal with 25 each. In contrast, Novartis India launched just seven new products and Glaxo-Wellcome six.
