Multi-Chamber Blister System ensures safe care in remote locations

Medicines and vaccines with unstable and moisture-sensitive ingredients can now be transported in one pack, safely and without cool storage, because of new technology developed by global packaging specialists Amcor and Rohrer-Leading Solutions

The Multi-Chamber Blister System is a pharmaceutical blister that incorporates Amcor’s SafeMix cold form laminate. 

One chamber can be filled with a dry powder incorporating an active ingredient and the other with a liquid. A frangible seal, once peeled, opens a channel between the chambers and the components are mixed by pushing on the cavities.

The pack enhances drug stability and simplifies the supply chain by eliminating cool storage and glass containers. SafeMix can also be used for diagnostics in situations when a complex laboratory environment cannot be set up.

Andrea Della Torre, Senior Director of Research and Development in Amcor Flexibles, Europe, Middle East and Africa, said the system represents a new way to transport vaccines or sensitive APIs. 

“Products can now be transported to even the most remote locations, which increases convenience and improves patient safety,” he said.

“The SafeMix laminates on the bottom and lid foil have special sealing properties with both a tight seal and easy peel seal. This allows the components to be combined accurately, providing ‘on-the-spot mixing’.”

Hans-Peter Rohrer, CEO at Rohrer-Leading Solutions, described how Rohrer-Leading Solutions has brought this innovation successfully to market through a combination of different capabilities.

“It was important that we mastered the blister sealing process using Amcor’s SafeMix to enable frangible, but still tight seals. Even more important was a unique, cost-efficient, inline sterilisation process to enable this technology to be used in sterile applications, where the API would not survive a later sterilisation procedure,” said Rohrer.

The Multi-Chamber Blister System has been granted a 2018 WorldStar award from the World Packaging Organisation, having already won an Alufoil Trophy from the European Aluminium Foil Association in the Technical Innovation category earlier in 2017.
