Stelmi to open a technical centre for innovation

Expands r&d resources for plastic components used in pharmaceutical industry

Stelmi, a French developer of elastomer components for the pharmaceutical industry, has created a technical centre at its headquarters near Paris, which will be operational early next year.

Comprising a pilot line that reproduces the production process of the components in elastomer and analytical laboratories, the firm said the technical centre would considerably expand r&d resources, approach new issues with the support of universities and specialist testing laboratories, trial new products, and provide customer assistance.

For nearly 50 years, Stelmi has been developing elastomer primary packaging closures for vials for antibiotics, lyophilisation, infusion, and diagnostics use, and for pre-filled syringes.

The company says its policy of constant innovation enables it to provide increasingly pure and inert formulations, and ‘ready-to-sterilise’ and sterile components for pharmaceutical use.

The main development areas going forward will be components for medicines coming from biotechnology, for oncology, and for vaccines.

Stelmi’s technical centre will also carry out compatibility studies of pharmaceutical closures made from plastic and find effective solutions.

In addition content/container compatibility, the technical centre’s priorities will be to address all other issues relating to surface state, ageing, or sealing, in cooperation with customers. It will also offer training courses to customers and partners involved in selecting elastomer components and host discussions.

The technical centre will have the equipment to reproduce all phases of the manufacturing process at the smallest scale, from weighing raw materials to packing in a cleanroom.

Stelmi has also installed testing apparatus, which will make it possible to assess products to anticipate potential causes of failures in production and find adequate solutions.
