More than three-quarters of the reduced price drugs treat central nervous system problems

The Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that it will reduce price caps on 188 innovative medicines from 1 January 2016. This is the country’s sixth round of reductions.

The ministry’s under-secretary for public health policy and licensing, Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri, has announced that 77% of the pharmaceuticals subject to the latest reductions treat central nervous system problems, 8% obstetrical, gynaecological and urologic problems; 5% lethal diseases and immune system depression; 4% ear nose and throat diseases, nutritional medicines and blood disorders; and 1% immune system disorders, vaccines and eye care medicines.

Al Amiri said 27 pharmaceutical companies had been consulted and were involved in the initiative.

'Prices will be slashed,' he said, adding that pharmacies had respected earlier price reductions.
