AkzoNobel and ICCO fund child AIDS projects
AkzoNobel and the ICCO (the Dutch Inter-Church Organisation for Development Co-operation) have signed a co-operation agreement to support two HIV/AIDS projects in the Johannesburg area of South Africa.
It puts the official seal on a partnership that began when the ICCO helped AkzoNobel to organise a support project in South Africa, designed to distribute the proceeds of a charity initiative involving the company's employees in the Netherlands.
The Sabelani Life Skills Project, which provides information on HIV/AIDS prevention, and the Lambano Baby Sanctuary, which provides homes for orphaned children with HIV/AIDS, will receive funding after AkzoNobel Nederlands's 'Cycling for Fun(d)' initiative raised more than e26,500 - which the ICCO doubled to €53,000 - by sponsoring employees for every kilometre cycled to work between October 2003 and October 2004.
'The partnership enables optimal use to be made of our expertise and network,' said Jack van Ham, general director of ICCO. 'ICCO has decided to double Akzo Nobel's donation because we value the initiative and because it fits in fully with our ambitions.'
