BASF on the way towards IT standardisation with SAP

Published: 1-Nov-2003

BASF IT services has standardised the SAP graphical user interface (GUI) for 18,000 BASF Group users. This will facilitate the imminent changeover of SAP systems to BASF's enterprise release and enable BASF group to react more quickly and precisely to new demands arising out of the SAP environment. With SAPGUI Version 6.20 Patch Level 18, BASF will reduce costs and improve efficiency.

The situation before the changeover was characterised by a heterogeneous structure that had grown organically with different release formats of the client software at 54 BASF sites in Europe. To make matters more complex, the project started in the midst of the company's PC standardisation project, meaning that BASF IT Services technicians had to deal with both standardised and non-standardised PCs.

'Through the project, we have greatly extended our know-how in dealing with the complete distribution of complex software like the SAPGUI,' said Theo Mittag, project manager and employee of the unit Program and Project Management of BASF IT Services. 'The experience we have gained came from a release management process based on the IT Infrastructure Library process, which promises us significant improvements in the future.'
