BASF's vitamin plant in Korea comes on stream

BASF's new vitamin B2 plant in Gunsan, Korea, has come on stream as scheduled. The facility has a capacity of 3,000 tonnes and will produce feed and food grade vitamin B2 under GMP conditions. The plant fits optimally into the infrastructure at BASF Gunsan site and benefits from synergies with the existing lysine fermentation.

With an annual lysine capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes, Gunsan is BASF's key fermentation site.

The company produces Vitamin B2 via a one-step fermentation from vegetable oil with the help of the fungus Ashbya gossypii and pioneered the shift from chemical to biotechnological vitamin B2 production on an industrial scale. Demand for vitamin B2 is estimated to grow at 4% annually.
