Benitec unveils revolutionary new gene control technology

Australian biotech company Benitec, based in Brisbane, has unveiled what it terms a revolutionary gene control technology.

Targeted gene silencing technology uses a natural cellular process known as RNA interference (RNAi) to silence any gene in any cell in any multicellular organism.

Describing the technology, non-executive director Professor John Mattick said: 'Benitec's technology is natural and potent and is recognised as offering a new means of gene control, which is significantly more effective than current antisense technology.'

Benitec was granted an Australian patent for the technology in January - the world's first patent granted for RNAi-mediated gene silencing - and has filing dates in all principal markets.

'The breadth of application and ease of this platform technology is being rapidly recognised,' said John McKinley, executive chairman and ceo.
