A report from the US-based Biotechnology Industry Organisation for the US Trade Representative office has accused Switzerland an Israel of intellectual property violations in its sector, which covers biopharmaceuticals.

Calling for Switzerland to be placed on a US government watch list, it said reforms to the Swiss patent law agreed by the country's national council in December could 'undermine..patent protection for certain biotechnology inventions in Switzerland.'

These changes are based on ethics, but the biotech group is concerned that an insistence that DNA fragment's functions be disclosed could force companies to publish commercially confidential information.

Regarding Israel, the biotech group complains its government has 'weakened the protection..regarding the use of data submitted by the originator of a new drug,' and advises it be kept on the US watch list.
