Canada agrees to patent

Bayer and the Canadian health ministry will take joint action to safeguard supplies of the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for Canadian citizens. The objective of the agreement is to ensure that supplies can be immediately provided for the population in the event of terrorist attacks with biological weapons.

Bayer has agreed to supply one million Cipro tablets to the national emergency stockpile system within 48 hours of demand.

The Canadian health authorities will respect the existing patent rights for Cipro, and have undertaken to acquire the antibiotic exclusively from Bayer during the period of the patent protection.
