Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, had said it recognises that the revised draft proposal for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) is a step in the right direction. However, more work needs to be done in order to make the system workable and more effective.

The EU chemical industry sees that, in terms of scope, some progress has been made. Overall, though, it says that further simplification of processes and procedures is needed to deliver health and environmental benefits effectively and to maintain the competitiveness of the European chemical industry.

The council welcomes the call for substantial changes expressed in the recent letter from the three heads of state and Governments from France, the UK and Germany to President Prodi. In this letter they request: 'a full evaluation of the concrete effects on the economy and a fast, simple and cost-efficient procedure'.
