South Asia's largest ever pharma services event, the inaugural CPhI India held in December in conjunction with the annual Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) and Pharma Expo, was attended by 31,000 visitors.

CPhI show organisers CMPi reported more than 11,000 dedicated visitors for the CPhI event, making this the largest ever debut for the show globally since its 1990 inception.

The three-day conference and exhibition, held at Mumbai's Bombay Exhibition Centre, attracted 325 exhibitors including 140 international companies from 18 countries. A further 275 companies participated in Pharma Expo. Major international exhibitors included DSM, Johnson Matthey, Sumitomo and Jubilant.

The annual show will return to the Bombay Exhibition Centre from 26-28 November 2007. Next year's CPhI India will introduce two further CMPi show's to the Indian market: contract services event ICSE and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Equipment convention, P-MEC.

'The vast attendance at the event, which outstripped even our own expectations, is testament to the tremendous growth that has been shown by the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry over the past few years,' said CMPi's group exhibition director Kate Chambers. 'By passing international intellectual protection legislation this year, India has become an ideal destination for r&d outsourcing for the international pharmaceutical industry. The availability of soft skills and knowledge base in India is increasingly attracting the international pharmaceutical industry to shift its research and development base to India.'

CPhI India is jointly organised by CMPi and its sister companies CMP Asia and CMP India.
