The Exclusive Synthesis & Catalysts business unit of Duesseldorf-based Degussa is to establish an r&d laboratory near Mumbai, India, this spring.

The lab will conduct contract research for lab and kilolab samples, develop syntheses and processes for the Exclusive Synthesis business line and be an integral part of the Degussa organisation.

In the first phase, which represents an investment of e1m, analytical and kilolab equipment will be installed in a 7,000ft2 facility. By the end of this year, 15 to 20 chemists and technicians will be hired.

'Our goal with this lab is to strengthen our r&d capabilities and our position as a provider of custom manufacturing solutions,' said Dr Rudolf Hanko, vice president, Exclusive Synthesis. 'We view India as a key region for growth in API manufacturing. Our customers are moving there, and we will meet the needs of our customers.'

The Degussa Exclusive Synthesis & Catalysts business unit has already established production for amino acids in China through its joint venture with Rexim Only Time Pharmaceuticals. The lab in India is a further step in its commitment to the pharmaceutical market and shows Degussa's intention to continue strengthening its position in Asia.
