Dow forms two contract service businesses to focus on pharma

Dow Chemical, based in Midland, Michigan, US, has formed two contract development and manufacturing service organisations to focus on the needs of the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, by realigning Dow CMS and the various companies from Ascot, acquired in June 2001.

The two new businesses have been named Pharmaceutical Services and Dow Haltermann Custom Processing. They become part of Dow's Custom & Fine Chemicals global business unit that also includes Angus Chemical and Haltermann Products. George Blitz, formerly president of Angus Chemical, is business vice-president for Custom & Fine Chemicals.

According to Blitz: 'The formation of these new service businesses are major steps in our five-year plan to become a major player in the pharmaceutical outsourcing field.'

Pharmaceutical Services will serve the bio and pharmaceutical markets, providing product and process development and manufacturing of intermediates and APIs. The new unit combines personnel and assets from Dow CMS with those from Ascot's Chirotech and Mitchell Cotts companies, Dow BCMS, as well as other pharmaceutical services.

The business operates research, process development and manufacturing facilities in both North America and Europe.

'We believe our new business offers a uniquely broad and deep capacity in the industry. Besides the company strengths and resources of Dow, and our experience in servicing the pharma sector as a one-time drug manufacturer, we offer the added talents and knowledge of specialists from Chirotech and Dow BCMS,' Blitz commented. 'Chirotech adds a world leadership position in chiral technology and BCMS adds a leadership position in the development and manufacture of biological proteins from microbial host cell systems and liposomes for use in human biotherapeutics.'

Commercial director of the Pharmaceutical Services – Europe and Pacific regions is Gwin Bompas. He is responsible for the commercial activities from early stage discovery, process development through commercial manufacturing to supply.
