Emissions trading framework welcomed by CIA
The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) has welcomed the advent of emissions trading with the announcement of a framework for a UK emissions trading scheme (ETS) by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The CIA has consistently advocated emissions trading as the least cost option for achieving energy savings and has opposed energy taxes, as exemplified by the climate change levy, as a policy instrument for addressing climate change. It is pleased that the UK government's voluntary scheme will give UK companies early experience of emissions trading and that it will also provide a risk management tool for those taking part in climate change agreements.
