EU launches trials partnership

Published: 1-Nov-2002

A European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership has been launched by the European Commission. Commanding €200m (US$196m) of Brussels' money, the initiative will develop new medicines and vaccines against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. It will involve the pharmaceutical industry and Norway as well as developing countries and will also see European Union institutions participating in Member States' national research and development programmes.

The announcement follows an earlier statement by the Commission that it was contributing a further €22m ($21.6m) to fight HIV/AIDS in developing countries, with this programme aimed primarily at illness prevention, care and treatment for young people, especially women.
