EU to step up Global Fund contribution Fund

Published: 20-Dec-2001

European Union ministers have been asked to approve the transfer of €60m (US$55m) from the general EU 2001 budget, most of which is currently earmarked for fishery support, to help finance the UN's Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in developing countries. The money will be the first of two tranches, with the European Commission also drawing up plans to give another €60m from the European Development Fund, to be reserved for African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.

The UN is planning to make its Global Fund operational by the end of the year and will focus on disease prevention. The initiative is separate from the specific anti-TB campaign recently launched by the WHO and other international bodies.
