Will offer new product development services

Glass and plastic packaging specialist Gerresheimer has established a Medical Innovation Group (MIG) in Regensburg, Germany to meet the demand from pharmaceutical and healthcare companies for more complex types of drug delivery systems such as syringe systems, insulin pens and inhalers.

The MIG will offer product management, design and development, as well as computer-aided design (CAD), intellectual property (IP) and documentation services.

The group will initially comprise seven engineers, designers and patent management experts with a variety of skills and a disparate approach to product development. They combine knowledge of user requirements with functional, technical and production-related specifications, design, market intelligence and design and engineering expertise.

‘We are creating the basic conditions that enable us to assist customers with their project when it is still an idea and not when the product is already developed,’ said Manfred Baumann, cto/coo of Gerresheimer Regensburg. ‘Our approach to product development starts with understanding the end user.’

He added that another major benefit for customers is that design for manufacturing can be integrated into product design and development, which translates into shorter development times, because post-development optimisation of the product for polymer processing is no longer necessary.

The MIG will operate independently of Gerresheimer’s Technical Competence Centre and production facilities.
