John Saul, senior vice president of primary manufacturing and engineering for GlaxoSmithKline, has been elected president of the London, UK-based Chemical Industries Association.

Saul, who has led the manufacture and supply of active ingredients for GSK since 2006, joined the company in 1981 and in the past 28 years has gained experience across a range of manufacturing activities. Prior to his current role he was responsible for strategy and global logistics within manufacturing, a position he took upon returning to the UK from Belgium where he was site director at Rixensart within GSK Biologicals.

"I am delighted to have been elected president. I think it shows the very close links between chemical and pharmaceutical businesses across the UK and I am looking forward to working with those businesses and with the CIA to make sure we have an effective voice for our industry," said Saul.

Steve Elliott, chief executive of the Chemical Industries Association, added: "John's election is very good news for our members. He brings an international understanding of manufacturing, especially its link to research and development. John and I will be working together to make sure government and Europe are clear on the policies that will make chemical and pharmaceutical businesses want to invest in the UK."
