A compound found in green tea, catechins, has been found to promote metabolism of body fats and lower both blood pressure and bad cholesterol, according to researchers at Kao Corporation in Japan.
In trials involving 240 subjects, half were given a drink containing a high level of green tea catechins, the other half a drink containing only a trace. Within the first group many lost 10cm2 in abdominal body fat, while blood pressure and bad cholesterol both declined significantly.
Trials in mice showed that a diet high in catchins resulted in about a 30% increase in the expression of a gene that controls the enzyme involved in fat elimination.
