Judith Hackitt, director general of the Chemical Industries Association (CIA), is to leave the Association at the end of January 2006 to take up the role of implementation manager on Cefic's 'Chemistry for Europe' project.
Steve Elliott, currently director of business environment at CIA, will take over as acting director general.
The European Chemical Industry Council, Cefic represents around 27,000 chemical companies that account for nearly a third of world chemical production. Chemistry for Europe, which has been underway for around 12 months, states it key goals to be:
Improving collective ability to influence MEPs and national governments.
Finding the right balance of activity between Cefic and national trade associations.
Harmonising EU-wide policy work.
Creating new governance structure for Cefic and more support for new EU member state associations.
'One of my key priorities since I was appointed director general of CIA nearly four years ago has been to work far more closely with Cefic, and the most striking example of our success in this regard has been over REACH [Regulation on Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals],' said Hackitt. 'I am very sad to leave CIA, but am looking forward to making the whole European trade association structure work as effectively as possible for all its members and continuing to improve the industry's overall advocacy effectiveness through my new role.'
