The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has issued guidelines on the packaging of pharmaceuticals, covering all primary packaging materials, including glass, rubber, plastic, aluminium, and others.

Its official global standard ISO 15378:2006, "Primary packaging materials for medicinal products" contains good manufacturing practices on quality control and assurance. This, said an ISO note, would enable pharmaceutical manufacturers "to minimise or eliminate instances of contamination, mix-ups, and errors", protecting "the customer from purchasing a product which is ineffective or even dangerous".

The standard is ISO's first for medicine packaging materials, and is "of vital importance to the pharmaceutical industry and its suppliers," said a spokesman.
