Keeping the lid on sterile packs
US company Ampac Flexibles - Converted Products, a unit of Ampac Packaging, has introduced a heavy gauge lidstock for physically demanding pharmaceutical/medical device applications.
Flexi 6864 is a polyester/foil/heat-seal coated polyethylene structure that has been engineered to heat seal to thermoformed trays made from a wide variety of materials, including Barex acrylonitrile, amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET), crystallised PET (CPET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP).
It features a thick (75-gauge) polyester and a 25.4µm foil layer to help create a high oxygen/moisture/ microbial barrier. The extra thickness is also needed to contain heavier-weight items and prevent the contents from being accidentally exposed prior to use. Additionally, Flexi 6864 has been engineered to overcome delamination issues.
The company says the film performs well through all production and use phases, including laminating, slitting, heat sealing, transport and end-use. The polyester layer can be reverse printed on Ampac Flexibles' 10-colour flex press.
