Independent UK analytical laboratory LGC has won more than £2.0m (€3.2m) in funding from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under the Measurements for Biotechnology programme. The two largest of eight separate contracts are worth more than £500,000 (€798,000) each and are for improving the comparability of data generated from gene expression microarrays and the quantification of proteins for proteome measurements.

Two contracts were awarded under Theme 1: Microarray Technology, both of which will be led by LGC and which will be of particular importance in the pharma and clinical diagnostics sectors. The major contract is to investigate the performance and comparability of microarrays used for gene expression and transcript profiling studies, while the second concerns the measurement issues and technical challenges in producing and using protein microarrays.

The other major contract under Theme 2: Genomics and Proteomics will seek to advance current successful options based on isotope labelling.

'With advances in drug discovery, pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine at such a critical stage, LGC is keen to improve the overall comparability and standardisation of measurements,' said Dr Richard Worswick, LGC's chief executive.
