A range of returnable insulated shippers for temperature sensitive products has been launched by UK company Laminar Medica, Europe's largest designer and manufacturer of TCPs (temperature controlled packaging).

Laminar has spent two years researching and developing the MediPorter range in response to an increasing customer interest in return to base units. This interest has been stimulated by economic and environmental considerations as well as by the rising standards required of transit packaging for temperature sensitive pharmaceutical products. Designed for local or national distribution for medical couriers, pharmacies, blood services as well as wholesalers, the MediPorter range can also be used cross-border provided that an RTB facility exists.

Thanks to their smooth interior design MediPorter units can be easily sanitised after use. Available in four sizes, they are designed to stack in such a way that the bottom container can sustain a load up to 500kg. The smallest unit in the range, the MediPorter 432, offers an external size of 410x 310x240mm, an internal size of 305x205x145mm and a weight of 4.6kg, while the largest unit, the 644, has dimensions of 610x410x445mm externally and 500x300x355mm internally, and weighs 12.5kg.

All of the units have tamper proof features and pallets and dollies are available to facilitate easy and safe movement and storage.

One of the major features of the range is the use of Laminar's Vactherm insulation panels. Never before used on this scale, the technology consists of an environmentally friendly filler material encapsulated in a barrier film evacuated to between 0.0013 and 1.3mb and sealed. This offers significantly greater payload and low operating costs than the equivalent volume of polystyrene needed to achieve the same insulation values.

The MediPorter range can be supplied in a range of colours, and with customers" branding applied by moulded nameplates, hot-stamping, pad printing or adhesive labels.
