Large fine for Pan Pharmaceuticals

Australian drug manufacturer Pan Pharmaceuticals has been fined A$3m for harming consumers and supplying counterfeit medication, but it is unlikely the company, now in liquidation with liabilities of A$180m, will be able to pay the fine.


Australian drug manufacturer Pan Pharmaceuticals has been fined A$3m for harming consumers and supplying counterfeit medication, but it is unlikely the company, now in liquidation with liabilities of A$180m, will be able to pay the fine.

Pan's liquidators pleaded guilty in December to 24 charges stemming from a 2003 Therapeutic Goods Administration investigation into the company. The inquiry was launched after complaints about its travel sickness drug Travacalm, and resulted in Australia's biggest medicines recall and Pan's collapse.
