Norway has launched a major international awareness campaign aimed at capitalising on Norway's extensive biotech expertise with a view to creating a viable economic sector.

The Life Sciences Norway campaign was initiated by the country's three leading promoters of life science: the Norwegian BioIndustry Association, the Norwegian Research Council and the Norwegian Trade Council. The three-phase project will run over the next two years and will begin with awareness studies among the international life sciences/pharma community and the press.

'Norway has a strong scientific tradition, for instance in immunology, oncology and neuroscience, and this is now reflected in the establishment of several centres of excellence and in the national functional genomics programme FUGE, said Ole Jorgen Marvik, president of the BioIndustry Association. 'We want to increase the international awareness of the potential in Norwegian life science, and its opportunities for young talents, industry collaboration and international venture capital. We are launching this cam-paign in order to bring out our main strengths to an international audience. We have already identified oncology, neuroscience, clinical trials and the exciting new field of marine biotechnology as key areas.'
