Lilly begins building new biotech plant in Puerto Rico
Construction has started on a world-class US$450m (€457m) biotech manufacturing facility for Eli Lilly in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The new plant will be used to manufacture Humalog, Lilly's biotechnology product derived from recombinant DNA for the treatment of diabetes. The 300,000ft2 facility is expected to become fully operational in late 2004. Some 450 jobs will be created.
Lilly Puerto Rico employs approximately 1,100 workers at three plants in Carolina and Mayaguez and 220 in its sales offices in San Juan. The new facility will also house a dedicated warehouse, a utility building, an administration building and an independent laboratory facility.
