The UK subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc., has launched its 2008 grant schemes, which are aimed at encouraging undergraduates interested in areas of chemistry and pharmaceutical science, to participate in scientific research during the summer holidays.

The grants, issued through Hertfordshire-based Merck Sharp & Dohme, will provide academic institutions with an allowance, travel expenses and costs for consumables to enable undergraduate students to support their project research.

David Storey, executive director of Pharmaceutical Research and Development at MSD, said: "We are delighted with the response to the grant schemes last year as well as the outcomes of the students and their projects. We hope this year's grant schemes will not only support the development of our UK research skills base but also highlight the many varied career opportunities which exist within the pharmaceutical industry."

A total of 17 research experience grants have been awarded since the grant schemes were launched in 2005.

Last year, the research grants covered diverse and important topics such as molecular co-crystals, drug loaded nano-particles and catalytic sulfenylation of heteroaromatics.
