New 3M tape tightens up on product counterfeiting

Among the products shown for the first time by 3M was a new Scotch security tape, 3560-0 Tamper Evident/Deterrent Tape, that offers protection against pilferage and counterfeiting of products during shipment. When the tape is peeled from the surface it will stress and separate, revealing hidden messages on both the tape and the box that show the handler that tampering may have occurred.

Once the tape has been peeled from a surface, it is virtually impossible to hide the revealed messages using the same piece of tape.

The pressure-sensitive tape is constructed of multi-layer film with a coating of solvent-free acrylic adhesive that remains effective after bonding, even in extreme temperatures. It can be used both on standard hand-held dispensers and in automatic carton-sealing machines.

3M also launched the 3M-Matic SA 2000 automatic labelling system that is said to offer high accuracy, good durability and substantially reduced costs. It prints variable or fixed data on a roll of Scotch Linerless self-adhesive tape, applying it in label format to the top or side of moving cartons. Variable label lengths – from 50 to 200 mm - can be programmed from a single roll, eliminating production stoppages to change labels for different runs, and the need to pre-order and store different sized label stock.

For the shipping of small, high value, fragile items, the company introduced 3M Air Cushion Packaging. Made from tear-resistant transparent plastic film, it takes the form of a bag within a bag. The product is placed in the inner pouch and the gap between the two pouches is filled with air, suspending the goods in a cushion to protect them from impact shock and vibrations.

The system is said to use less space than traditional cushioning products, substantially reducing the volume and cost of shipping. 3M Air Cushion Packaging comes in a range of standard sizes and in disposable and reusable versions. Custom sizes and shapes can be provided, as can static discharge shielding, custom printed and quilted products.
