New chairman for BASF plc

Dr Walter Seufert, BASF president Europe, has become chairman of BASF plc, the group's main operating company in the UK.


Dr Walter Seufert, BASF president Europe, has become chairman of BASF plc, the group's main operating company in the UK.

The appointment sees him replace Barry Stickings CBE, who left BASF after 33 years' service, but will continue to be actively involved in the chemical industry and will also act as a consultant to BASF.

Dr Seufert, who studied organic chemistry at the University of Stuttgart and earned his Ph.D in 1976; joined the main laboratory of BASF in 1980. He became president of BASF Argentina and of Glasurit de Argentina in 1990; head of fibre products marketing at BASF corporation in the US in 1994; president of BASF's competence centre environment, safety and energy in 1999 and president Europe in 2004.

BASF plc employs more than 450 people and had a turnover of more than £600m in 2003.
